What better way to spend your summer break working in the City of London, getting an insight into what it takes to succeed in an Investment bank? We gave ten second year undergraduates the chance to follow in the footsteps of our Alumni Associates and receive training at the Academy before working for 10 weeks as Alumni Interns at NatWest Markets.
It all sounds good in theory...but how did they get on?
The interns started their journey at our London Training Academy with Technical Director, Ben Wong. The group were given an outline of the technologies and methodologies they would be working with, as well as pointers for getting the most out of the experience.
Starting at NatWest Markets
At the end of a busy 10 weeks, the teams presented their projects at an event, with Alumni Associates and project sponsors from NatWest Markets and MThree in attendance.
Team A’s project saw them create a market data simulator, while team B presented their trade lifecycle project. Team C showcased their project that enabled users to navigate relationships across systems by creating a product that drills into instrument data. After presentations had been delivered, the event was brought to a close with speeches from NatWest and a toast to celebrate a successful 10 weeks.
Our MThree interns have now returned back to University representing the company on campus as Brand Ambassadors. With the support of our Alumni engagement team and a box full of MThree branded giveaways, they are well equipped to share their summer experiences and promote the Graduate opportunities we offer through our Alumni Programme.
What our Alumni interns had to say...
One of the greatest things about this internship was the ability to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. The team at NatWest Markets and MThree worked really hard to make sure you get the most out of the 10 weeks at work and provide you with huge networking opportunities.”
- Amandeep Kaur Bhasin
I would recommend the internship to other undergraduates as it provides many experiences you wouldn’t normally get at University - working as a team on the same code is just one example. Having worked in an office before, I really enjoyed working at NatWest MArkets as the offices felt a lot more friendly in comparison!”
- Emily Hardway
- Hannah Wales
"Being a Computing student, this internship has allowed me to develop and improve my programming skills through working with different languages and technologies. As a result of this internship, I have grown as a person and have learned I can push myself in a new environment.”
- Asha Wittchen
"Before beginning this internship, I definitely had my fair share of worries, however from day one NWM and MThree have worked really hard to make sure that we get the most out of our internship and as result this 10 week internship has been a life-changing experience for me, that I will always cherish for the rest of my career.”
- Zehra Punjwani
"Our projects were challenging but there was always help when needed, all we had to do was ask. I’ve also been able to gain a valuable insight in the banking sector and network with many people. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering an IT internship."
- Anita Chan
"During this internship, I've learned a lot about the financial world as well as the technology used within it. It’s been great to get some real hands on experience and being able to work on a project that will have a real impact on the company has been very insightful."
- Jessica Olivia Holding
"Working at NWM has given me a great insight into the technology industry. It was incredibly different from what I learned in university and it was great to see what it is like to work on real life projects, with a concrete aim in mind. I enjoyed meeting all the wonderfully helpful people at NWM and, excuse the cliché, learning something new every single day."
- Uchechi Odikanwa
"The support given by both MThree and NWM employees was encouraging and motivating whilst leaving a lot of self-learning to take place making the whole experience a rewarding one."
- Harriet Lampey
